Volunteer with Genesee County Habitat for Humanity

Genesee County Habitat for Humanity is a volunteer-driven organization. We welcome people from all walks of life to join us as we build simple, decent, affordable houses in partnership with God and families in need. Though the vast majority of volunteers have no construction experience or building skills, volunteers are involved in most phases of construction. By working side-by-side with the family who will live in the house, our volunteers experience for themselves the joy created when a family is able to realize their dream of home ownership.

FAQs
The majority of Habitat’s volunteers donate their time on the construction site, building homes alongside our partner families and construction staff on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. No experience is necessary to volunteer with Habitat – we are a teaching organization! Tasks include framing, roofing, painting, landscaping and installing siding, windows, doors and insulation. Our work days begin at 9:00 a.m. and end around 3:00 p.m.

How do I sign-up?
Volunteers can register to serve by calling the office at (810)766-9089 xt. 4 and speaking with the Volunteer Coordinator – Ryan Johnson.

What is my commitment?
The commitment is up to you! You may work one time or as many as you wish. You may come as a part of a group, and then decide that you would like to continue volunteering as an individual. We are delighted to work with you to fit your needs and schedule.

What skills are required?
No specific skills are needed, just a willingness to learn and a positive attitude. Genesee County Habitat provides an experienced site leader on each work site who will provide on-the-job training. Safety is important to us and therefore we will have a safety talk at the beginning of each work day.

What do I need to bring?
No tools are necessary, but if you have them you are encouraged to bring basics, such as a hammer, nail apron, tape measure, utility knife and a pencil. Please clearly label all of your tools with your name or initials. When required we will provide hard hats and safety goggles. It’s always a good idea to wear a hat and sunscreen when working outdoors. We try to find a lunch and water for each work day but does not work out each day, you may want to bring your own just in case. All volunteers are required to fill out the Volunteer Waiver Form, which are provided on the work site.

What do I wear?
Footwear needs to be sturdy and closed-toe and closed-heel. Boots or sneakers are both considered appropriate footwear. Please prepare for the weather by checking the forecast before you arrive at the work site. If it is sunny, please bring a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses. If it is raining, please bring a jacket, raincoat, and/or rain boots.

What will happen when I arrive at the site?
At the beginning of each workday, a Habitat site supervisor will begin the morning with a prayer, introductions, a safety talk and instructions. The group will then break into crews to work on the various building tasks.
