Bringing people

homes, communities
and hope
Our Vision
A world where everyone has a decent place to live.
Our Mission
Seeking to put God's love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together
to build homes, communities, and hope.
Our History
Founded in 1990, Genesee County Habitat for Humanity (Genesee Habitat) is one of nearly 1,200 United States affiliates of Habitat for Humanity International, founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller, with the vision of eliminating poor housing conditions and homelessness from the world. Since then, Habitat for Humanity has maintained that vision by incorporating both housing and community development in its mission of building homes, communities and hope.
As an affiliate, Genesee Habitat yearly builds or rehabs 6-8 affordable homes in Genesee County, provides approximately 100 Genesee County homeowners with critical repair services, and invests in numerous neighborhood projects throughout the City of Flint. Genesee Habitat also operates the ReStore, which offers greatly discounted new or slightly used household items to the public, diverting 300 tons a year from Genesee County landfills.
Additionally, in partnership with LISC, Genesee Habitat opened the Financial Opportunity Center, where Genesee County residents can receive financial coaching and job preparedness assistance, free of charge.
Service Areas
Homeownership Services: Genesee Habitat constructs new and rehabilitates existing housing throughout Genesee County to provide low-to-moderate income individuals and families with affordable housing options. Prospective Habitat Homeowner Partners are evaluated based upon three criteria: the need for housing, a willingness to partner with Habitat and the ability to pay an affordable mortgage. Additionally, Genesee Habitat’s HUD Certified Housing Counselors provide pre-purchase homebuyer education workshops online through eHome America and in-person classes.
Critical Home Repair Program: Genesee Habitat provides repair services to over 100 qualifying homeowners per year within Genesee County. The program helps low-to-moderate income homeowners alleviate health and safety issues in and around their home. Eligible repairs include roofs, structural damage, porch repair, electric, plumbing, HVAC, handicap accessibility, siding, exterior paint, weatherization and energy efficiency.
Neighborhood Revitalization Program: Genesee Habitat works hand-in-hand with residents in the City of Flint to support grassroots engagement, build local leadership and provide residents with the tools necessary to impact community-driven change within their own neighborhoods. In addition to leadership training initiatives, Genesee Habitat’s Flint BRAND Program (Building Resident Action by Neighborhood Design), provides funds to grassroots neighborhood groups for physical improvements in neighborhoods throughout the City of Flint.
HUD Housing Counseling: Genesee Habitat provides HUD housing counseling services, a personal financial service center that focuses on the financial bottom line for individuals. Open to all, the center helps individuals take charge of their finances in a way that encourages a long-term commitment towards increasing income, decreasing expenses, and acquiring assets. Genesee Habitat provides families with services across three areas: housing counseling services to homebuyers and homeowners, rental counseling services, and homebuyer education.
ReStore: Open year-round Tuesday through Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM (except holidays), the Habitat ReStore accepts donated building and home improvement items, which are then offered for sale to the public at below retail prices. All proceeds go toward supporting Habitat’s mission of providing affordable home-ownership opportunities to individuals and families right here in Genesee County.
Population Served
On average, Genesee County Habitat serves over 500 Genesee County residents per year. One hundred percent of those served are of low-to-moderate income, as defined by the US Department of HUD.
All Are Welcome!
Genesee Habitat has an open-door policy: All who believe that everyone deserves a decent, affordable place to live are welcome to help with the work, regardless of race, religion, age, gender, political views or any of the other distinctions that too often divide people. In short, Genesee Habitat welcomes volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds and serves people in need of decent housing, regardless of race or religion. As a matter of policy, Habitat for Humanity International and its affiliates do not proselytize. This means that Genesee Habitat will not offer assistance on the expressed or implied condition that people must either adhere to or convert to a particular faith, or listen and respond to messaging designed to induce conversion to a particular faith.
